The recent buzz about Islamic law can have very real implications for American law and policy, but not because Islamic law is something to be feared. Rather, proponents of the “shari’a creep” theory are attempting to amplify and exploit fear of a foreign concept for political leverage in order to influence the outcome of elections and congressional decisions. But they do so in a way that displays little information or understanding about what Islamic law actually is. This guide aims to demystify Islamic law and its applications in everyday life, particularly within the context of the current political and social issues of concern to most Americans. What does Islamic law have to say about those issues? We ask islawmix expert Mohammad Fadel, Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, to share his thoughts.
